Wow, what a stunning and unique piece of work! Coming into Whose Waves These Are, I honestly didn't think I would like it all that much since I had read one of Dykes' previous books and didn't enjoy it. However, it totally exceeded and went beyond my expectations.
I love how the lantern and waves off in the distance symbolizes the story, leaving an eye-catching and absolutely gorgeous cover. It definitely stands out among other historical fiction tales and fits the book super well! What's inside the book also stands up to the cover really well; the well-written characters, the plot that jumps back and forth from different time periods, and the fluid writing style.
My favorite character was probably Jeremy Fletcher because although at first, he seems like a typical silent, strong person with a lot of anger hidden under, he turns out to have a lovely character that only enhances the character of Annie Bliss. I think it's very unique that Amanda Dykes writes the main characters as more "typical" characters but then expands and makes unique their personalities.
One thing I did find extremely confusing at first was the way the plot jumped between different time periods. I did get used to it by the middle of the book and really started to enjoy how it opened up the personalities of one of the characters.
Overall, definitely a unique book! Whose Waves These Are takes a bit of time to get used to the writing style and time period switching, but once I got used to it I fell in love with it. I would highly recommend it to historical fiction lovers.
